Back Flip in BEAST MODE!

Back Flip in BEAST MODE!

Today, I took my son to the pool and we had a blast! I asked him what trick he would like for me to jump off the diving board- he said "BACK FLIP".

Last year, I was doing them pretty regularly. I am happy to report that I was able to do a ton of them off the board without any issues! You should hear the little ones say "WHOA!".

It brings a smile to my face every time. This video is from the last day at the pool in 2013. I hope it brings a smile to your face!

The Power of a Compliment!

The Power of a Compliment!

Lately, I have been working hard to eat better and cross train. I love the results! What I love the most, is the way it makes me feel. In the past week, I have heard a few really nice compliments.

To all of you, it just flat out makes my day and motivates me beyond word. It got me thinking again. Compliments really matter. In our fast paced world, it is easy to forget to give them.

Here is my challenge to you. Tomorrow, compliment two people if you can. Stop and deliberately give them the good stuff. Tell them they look handsome or pretty, have a nice smile or anything that is genuine.

Watch as they receive the news. You will get a nice reward! By the way, I want to thank each of you reading my BLOG. It makes me smile to think you enjoy it.

Next week I will feature a series that will focus on the power of one person. It will highlight how one person can truly make a difference. My list of people is going to delight you. If you have someone you want to recommend, please email me at jim.connely56@gmail.com and I will feature them.

Have a nice night!

Water!

Water!

I run miles for the "charity miles app" and they donate money to the charity of my choice. Recently, I have been supporting the Michael J Fox charity. The charity miles app is available on iTunes. This app rocks. Occasionally, I learn about other really cool things. For example, You are What you Drink supports the Michael J. Fox organization. This water charity has a ton of cool stats and campaigns. They have a #spreadthewater campaign. It talks about how water made history. The perspective is amazing! Visit their site:

BEAST MODE!

BEAST MODE!

One of my recent favorite phrases is "BEAST MODE". I have a tendency to get stuck on something for awhile and I know that annoys people sometimes. However, try this out. Tell someone they are operating in BEAST MODE for their work, fitness, races or workouts.

When I do this, the person on the other end either smiles or laughs. They immediately get a pick up. One of my good friends says "BEAST MODE is always stuck in ON mode". I can only smile like crazy because it is true.

6:16 AM

6:16 AM

Earlier this week, a friend of mine sent me a video of the "Ultimate Warrior". The video is now one of my all time favorites! In the video, the warrior talks about digging deep, doing the work and most importantly changing your perspective on the world and in life. He talks about killing your self doubt and fear.

I have never been one to shy away from work and pride myself on being courageous. However, I have been a bit timid about cross training in a certain way.

The timing of this video was perfect for me, as I was just about to embark on the cross training. For some reason, I was afraid of things like this:

  • Would I be weak? Well of course I would be, I haven't done this before.
  • What if I really liked it? Could I find the time to consistently do it?
  • What if the cross training didn't work for me?
After watching the video, I was struck how the warrior referenced 6:15 AM and how you can be dragging...and at 6:16 AM, you could turn it all around! The change in intensity, passion and attitude is your choice. At 6:16 AM, you could unlock your potential and eliminate any fear you have.

For me, I will use the 6:16 AM reference or "code" to remind myself to dig deep and display courage!

Home or Away?

Home or Away?

As many of you know, I am a BIG Iowa Hawkeye football fan. The Hawks are great when they play at home. The crowd really helps them out. I have run and finished the Chicago marathon 3 times. Since I am from Chicago, it’s like playing a home game for me. I know the area, love the scenery, and enjoy the fact that I see my family and friends. The crowd gets me through. Even the restaurants are even familiar to me, which rocks!

A marathon is intimidating, as it tests your physiology and mind. It’s the supreme test of planning, execution and will power. I like to say you have to “earn the finish line”.

This Fall I will be playing my first “away” game. It is the Marine Corps Marathon, and I am so excited and nervous. I am nervous because the course is different, the process will be different and I don’t know yet what to expect. I have started my studies of the course, timing, etc. I have discovered what they call “beat the bridge”. It means you have to reach the 20 mile mark at a certain point or you get picked up by a bus or have to run in traffic. I know- no joking with me on getting picked up by a bus or running in traffic J
This brings me back to a very important point. You can only work with what you can control. I will know focus all of my efforts on myself and conditioning. I will be ready. I will train differently. I will beat the bridge. I like to visualize things, so it’s important to see the bridge. If you are interested, it’s pictured below.

Hey bridge, see you in October- it’s going to be a defining moment!

Discovery

Discovery

This week was awesome! I discovered a new path to cross training and subsequently found muscles that haven't been used in a long time. Before I cross trained a friend sent me a video and I love it! The video has some swearing in it, so I won't post the link. Maybe next week:)

After watching this video, I discovered a new training mantra. I will unveil it next week. It gets me going and it's a fun one. Stay tuned.

Cross Training/New Path

As you may have read, I am going to ratchet up my effort, intensity and will modify my approach for training this year. Tomorrow, I will embark on some new cross training.

Although I am a bit nervous, it's exciting. Tomorrow night I will give you my perspective. We are on FULL BEAST MODE!

It's going to be fun!

My training goals!

My training goals!

For my upcoming campaign to run the Marine Corps marathon, I have set an aggressive schedule, plan and goal.

This year, I am determined to lose a little more weight before the formal training. I will be working with a new training schedule and diet. My new schedule will feature increased mileage, speed work and cross training.

Always, I have the goal of finishing. This year, I will break the 5 hour 30 minute mark.
BOOM!

Trail run success!

Trail run success!

Today I ran the MVRA trail run (10K). It was a great race! The weather was amazing and I achieved a personal record for a 10K. I learned a ton about myself today.

Today I attacked the course early and battled 10 seconds of self doubt. Toward the end of the race, I remembered how to finish. My Spotify song selection rocked me through too. I listened to "Let it go" for my son Nile. It made a huge difference for me. I was doing his hand gestures too. I think the people around me thought I was CRAZY.

:)

The race today had so many great stories. I was lucky to take part in it. Thank you to all of the volunteers and race workers. You all are amazing! I am pictured here in the shades, head band and white Calico Bean Market shirt:)

Find your rhythm!

Find your rhythm!

When I run in any race, it takes me a little while to find my "rhythm". Once I do find it, the race really starts to get fun. I use music to help me find my rhythm and if I don't have music, I pay attention to my breathing.

I can always tell when it's good because my stride and cadence seem to glide. One of my favorite songs is "Night Shift" by the Commodores. At your next race or fun run, play the song. You will find yourself getting lost in the sweet sounds....coming down....on the night shift:)

She motivates me!!!

She motivates me!!!

I bet you might be wondering who I was talking about! Truthfully, there are so many people that have motivated me and motivate me on a daily basis. I wish that I could list them all.

Today, I would like to share my experience with the Nike plus app. They have famous runners talk to you as you are close to goals or meet them. Whenever Shalane tells me I am close to a goal, I rev up and dig deeper. She rocks. I love her intensity and enthusiasm.

The Nike plus app is amazing to me and has really made a difference for me.

Renewed Determination!

Renewed Determination!

Today I was looking at one of my personal goals. It's an important goal to me, but I haven't focused on it enough. The result is marginal progress. This bothers me.

I read a motivating article about someone who has it much worse than I could ever imagine. I am taking a new look at this goal and I am more determined to get the job done.

I look at this goal often, but needed to recalibrate:) my mind and body are saying lets get it done!

Rocking the Stache

Rocking the Stache

So the other day, we taped a video for a conference and I had to grow a mustache. It has been the spark of some good banter back and forth between family and friends. Some people love it, and a majority does not.
It has caused me to ponder the future of the mustache. Let me present you with the facts. Since I have sported the mustache, my running times have improved dramatically. Is this a coincidence or could the spirit of Steve Prefontaine be alive in me through the mustache.

Personally, I am convinced the mustache is making a HUGE difference in my running.  It is securing the speed and tenacity I need. I could rock the stache through October....or maybe longer?

Maybe I will keep it for a while…what do you think?

Digging Deeper!

Digging Deeper!

On multiple occasions this week, I have been faced with an opportunity to cut my runs shorter. One day I woke up later than expected, I struggled with a cold, the weather conditions were bad, etc.

What I am most proud of, I focused on digging deeper. The Nike Plus app motivated me forward. True I am running a marathon in October, but I haven’t formally started training yet.

These maintenance miles are really going to help. I am so looking forward to the Marine Corp Marathon. Also, digging deeper can be a fun experience!
