It's always about effort!

It's always about effort!

It's always about effort! Whether it is sports, hobbies or business, your success is directly related to the amount of effort you put in. Have you ever met a successful person who is "casual" about their success or interest? The most successful people are difficult to stop because they have incredible effort. The most successful leaders read about their profession or craft, attend training for their craft, and try to get better with relentless effort- every day.  They lead by example and bring others along.

I have read many times that Michael Jordan practiced for 3 hours a day. He would practice shots from just about every angle, free throws, weight lifting and all of the other fundamentals. Because of his effort, he succeeded. You may be saying to yourself, “Well he had so much talent”. This is true, but talent only gets you so far. Plenty of other basketball players had more talent than Michael Jordan. They did not work like he did. Ask yourself, what kind of effort do I bring every day? How much do I read about my craft or profession? It’s not too late to ratchet up your effort levelJ

Trait #3 Strength

Trait #3 Strength

This is a great trait, strength. The article describes the elements as being tough and flexible. In the marathon, there will always be some sort of a curve ball or significant challenge. For me, I have run three different full marathons and I have encountered the following:

  • Mild muscle cramps (my first marathon)
  • Severe muscle cramps (my second marathon)
  • Forgetting to take the right amount of fuel (my second marathon)

Notice the trend, I didn't write about the third marathon. I changed my plan on the third and it worked. Strength is inherent in the marathon. In my first two marathons, I had to revise my plans, remain flexible and I had to BELIEVE.

Being strong will help you in anything you do, but especially the full marathon.

Mental Toughness

Mental Toughness

Being mentally tough in marathon, marathon training and in the race is paramount. You learn it over a period of 16-18 weeks and you test it during the "big" race. Here are my tips for being mentally tough:

1. Believe in yourself. It's the most important thing you can do in life, business or running.
2. Visualize the finish. It's going to get difficult or rough. How do you see the reward? The finish line will be the most amazing feeling.
3. Positive self talk. What you say to yourself will dictate the outcome.
4. Believe in yourself. Did I already say that? Yes. It's that important. You deserve it!

TBT

TBT

You have to love #TBT. It's throw back Thursday. As many of you may or may not know, I love the game of golf. As a high school athlete (picture below), I played golf almost every day I could. What is interesting to me about golf and my high school career boils down to four things:

1. Do the work! I worked a bunch of terrible jobs to pay for my golf clubs and membership. I cleaned ovens for an entire year, yes an entire year. I washed dishes, worked in a freezer. The golf....I enjoyed every minute of it and really worked hard at getting better. Yes- the picture below features the first Taylor Made "Pittsburgh Persimmon". I still have the club too. You can't part with something you worked so hard to get.
2. Back in the day, golf was not popular. Today it is. Some people would say "golf isn't a sport". Our coach called us great students and athletes. We loved playing for him.
3. Hard work, self belief and dreams pay off. I missed the tryouts as a freshman, cut as a sophomore, and had to work like crazy to make the varsity team. I made the team against all of the odds. It's a great story about a young man who was determined to prove he deserved a spot on the team. I am eternally grateful to my Mom, Dad, sisters and friends. They all supported me and stuck by me. You all rock!
4. Caddyshack rocks. Each guy on our team resembled a character from the movie. It made our time together so much fun. I always smile when I watch that movie.

This blog post is dedicated to Todd Auskalnis. I played golf with Todd, and he passed away unexpectedly in late 2013. To me, he was a great friend, and teammate. He was a loving father and husband. He was a great son and brother. We will all miss you. Godspeed my man. Rest in peace.
