Testing your limits!

Testing your limits!

This week my training plan was designed to test my limits. It sure did! I learned so much this week. Perhaps the most valuable lesson came with the interval training. I was afraid of it and performed well. It gave me so much confidence for the rest of the week.

My long run was a great test so far. I survived the run, but need some more work to get in marathon mode. Thank God for 10 more weeks!

My cross training efforts were solid and have really paid off. Here's to a nice rest day!

Marathon training is in full swing

Marathon training is in full swing

What a week of training! I really put in the mileage this week and it felt great. On my long run, I ran 14 miles. It was a difficult long run, as I decided to space my water break out too far.

This upcoming week, I will focus more on my pace, fueling strategy and hydration. I will slowly start incorporating speed work in the mix too.

What a great run should look and feel like!

What a great run should look and feel like!

It's been a weird Spring for me running wise. I have encountered a few nagging issues with my feet, back and motivation/mental focus. I have been solidly working through each one.

To fix my feet, I changed shoes (experimenting has paid off) and strengthening exercises.
To fix my back, I have stretched, cross trained and hit the chiropractor.
To fix my motivation/mental focus, I signed up for a full marathon and have been really thinking about changing my training. It is working!

Here is what I am so excited to tell you about. Today, I had a run that was amazing. I just went out and didn't worry too much about my pace (initially). My first mile was 2 minutes faster than usual. The next four miles, I pushed myself to run more instead of walking through difficult spots.

I finished the run strong and experienced true joy. I feel like I have really turned the corner!

I am excited to share with you the other things I will be changing up for the rest of the year- stay tuned!

How do you get out of a running funk?

Re-setting my approach

Re-setting my approach

The year is young and I have found myself in a position to "re-set". This means I need to get back to work with my cross training. I have been doing OK with my runs. I like what I have done so far and will need to pick it up when the weather gets better.

The cross training is going to help me achieve my marathon PR. Here we go!

The journey will begin soon....

The journey will begin soon....

The journey will begin soon....I have been thinking a lot lately. I will run another full marathon in 2015. It's going to be a matter of where. I am so excited.

My confidence stems from:
  • I have one more year of experience
  • I have one more year filled with cross training
  • I have one more year to eat better
  • I am more determined
  • You will help me
  • My family and friends are my rock
  • I like competing
  • Goals will be realized
  • I run for JP!
  • A charity needs me...could it be Diabetes in Action, Livestrong, American Cancer Society, or others....
If you have a charity choice or like the ones above, let me know what charity you would select. :)

Focused 2015

Focused 2015

Oh yeah! It's January and time to focus and refocus. I am going to get to work on some different approaches. 2014 was a year of experiments for me. I took the results and analyzed them. Here's a preview of my new plan.

1. Earlier and consistent speed work.
2. Refine my hydration plan for racing (tweaks).
3. Cross train!
4. Modify my pacing earlier in the year.
5. Mix up the routes.
6. Refine my racing weight.

I am excited beyond words. I will have fun. What goals do you have for running or fitness?

I LOVE Mondays!

I LOVE Mondays!

I LOVE Mondays! Today, I didn't run and that was not fun. However, I did complete some cross training:)

I enjoy Mondays because I am grateful for every day. It's surprising to me how many people roam around grumbling that it is "Monday". I always respond with "be glad you have a Monday".

Enjoy every day, that's what I believe.

A good week of training

A good week of training

It's been a good week of training for me. The weather has been pretty cold, but I have been logging the miles and feel good. I am not training for a specific race yet.

In addition to running, I have been keeping up with cross training. As the Fall wears on and the Winter settles in, I am going to remain focused.

I can't wait to sign up for my next big race!

This picture is from a trip I took in North Carolina, more on that later!

Getting back into a good rhythm!

Getting back into a good rhythm!

I have always felt like Mondays are a true "set the tone" day of the week. Today was truly it. I ran a quick five mile run today, worked out at lunch and ate better today. It's a rhythm that I was used to during my marathon training. I am excited to keep it going. I don't have a big race to train for, but am researching options. Stay tuned. For now...keep a good rhythm.

What band does this drummer play for?
For extra bonus points, what is his nickname?

Week 4 is in the books!

Week 4 is in the books!

It was an awesome training week. I must say it was difficult toward the second half. I ran 12 miles today and fell victim to my own clumsiness. I tried multi-tasking by sending an email...bad move. I ended my Nike + run and that threw things off.

In addition, I stumbled with my nutrition supplement and spilled it all over. SHOOT. I love the supplement. More on that supplement later....I hear the Calico Bean Market will be stocking it soon, which has me SUPER excited!

This week I ran great and worked hard on the cross training. I feel like the cross training is making such a HUGE difference!

The weekend is a special time and I hope you enjoy your time with family and friends. I will post some more stuff tomorrow.

Rock and Roll!

A new experience at the end of week 1: marathon training!

A new experience at the end of week 1: marathon training!

Week 1 rocked the house. I ran well and really focused on my strategies, pace and overall time. For the most part, I improved all week. In addition, I maintained my cross training during the week too. Today, I tried biking (officially). I did not know what to expect. It was a HUGE surprise!!!

For all of my friends who bike, please don't get mad or laugh at me. I will tell you my surprise, and it stems from the fact that I thought biking would be easy. Boy was I wrong. I did 5.5 miles with hills. What a killer workout.
I respect biking to the fullest know and am excited to keep working it in my schedule for training. While on my ride this morning, it rained like the dickens. That was fun for me, but it affected my GPS watch. It's a great watch that is waterproof. Something must have happened to the seal, because it had a bit of water inside. YIKES! It is taking a dip in a bowl of rice- keep your fingers crossed. :)

I can't wait for week 2...oh and it's 105 days until the big race. I am so excited! WOO HOO!

The Power of a Compliment!

The Power of a Compliment!

Lately, I have been working hard to eat better and cross train. I love the results! What I love the most, is the way it makes me feel. In the past week, I have heard a few really nice compliments.

To all of you, it just flat out makes my day and motivates me beyond word. It got me thinking again. Compliments really matter. In our fast paced world, it is easy to forget to give them.

Here is my challenge to you. Tomorrow, compliment two people if you can. Stop and deliberately give them the good stuff. Tell them they look handsome or pretty, have a nice smile or anything that is genuine.

Watch as they receive the news. You will get a nice reward! By the way, I want to thank each of you reading my BLOG. It makes me smile to think you enjoy it.

Next week I will feature a series that will focus on the power of one person. It will highlight how one person can truly make a difference. My list of people is going to delight you. If you have someone you want to recommend, please email me at jim.connely56@gmail.com and I will feature them.

Have a nice night!
